EMERGING ARTIST
Lenox Monroe (born July 9, 2002) is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller born in Indianapolis, IN.
Early life (2006 – 2020)
Lenox Monroe grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis, IN. She began singing and performing on stage in elementary school. By the time she was in middle school, Monroe had performed in dozens of musical theatre productions, collecting multiple awards for her roles on stage. She began privately studying classical voice at age 12. In high school, Monroe continued to perform in theatre productions, sang in choir, began learning piano and playing ukulele, competing in national vocal competitions like the Schmidt Vocal Competition (won Best Sophomore) and Michael Feinstein’s Great American Songbook Vocal Competition (2-time National Finalist) and began to pen her own original music.
The summer between her sophomore and junior year in high school, Monroe attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, MI.
Despite her involvement in so many different aspects and genres of music, Monroe felt something was missing, so she turned to writing her own music to fill it.
She sent the first song she ever wrote to her best friend. Monroe says, “Granted, it wasn’t much of a song; it was more or less a low-quality recording of me pounding the keys of my vintage Yamaha keyboard and singing along. Even still, she implored me to keep writing and sharing, and to never stop.”
Her best friend tragically passed away in a car accident in 2018.
“I knew in my heart that the only way for me to heal and honor my friend would be to write and share my music with others.”
COLLEGE YEARS (2020 – Present)
Following high school graduation, Monroe originally intended to pursue musical theatre in college, but decided to change course and focus on vocal performance, ultimately choosing to study at the renowned Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
Studying under the guidance of Wolfgang Brendel, widely considered one of the greatest baritones of his generation, Monroe unlocked new dimensions in her sound and found new freedom in her artistic choices that extended beyond the boundaries of the classical or contemporary canons.
MUSIC CAREER (2021 – Present)
In late 2021, on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, Monroe posted a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” to Instagram. That cover garnered her some attention and a subsequent opportunity to work with established songwriters and producers in Nashville, TN. In December of 2022, she traveled to Nashville for her first writing sessions with industry veterans who have penned songs for artists like Betty Who, Keb Mo, Maddie & Tae, David Archuletta, Ronnie Dunn, Shenandoah, Phillip Phillips, Bucky Covington, and George Canyon.
In March 2023, Monroe traveled back to Nashville to record her first three songs. She returned to Nashville in July 2023 to record three more. During that visit, Monroe was invited to visit Cinderella Sound Studio, the oldest surviving independent studio in Nashville, TN, which was founded in 1961 by legendary guitarist, Wayne Moss. The studio’s client list has included Linda Ronstadt, the Steve Miller Band, Kiss, Charlie Daniels, Grand Funk Railroad, Chet Atkins, Moby, and more!
While at Cinderella, Country Music Hall of Famer, two-time CMA Musician of the Year, and Grammy Award winner, Charlie McCoy was recording his latest project. McCoy has recorded with legendary artists including Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash. He is one of the most-recorded session musicians of all time. After recording his first cut, McCoy invited Monroe to sing background vocals on one of his songs. She ultimately added background vocals to two more.
Gaining traction with her live performances, Monroe currently serves as the Bloomington Artist Community Chair on the Hoosier Original Music Association Board of Directors.
Monroe is actively booking and playing shows as she pursues her long-term career in commercial music. Follow her social media for updates, photos, music, and more. Then, you’ll be even closer to knowing the answer to, “Who is Lenox Monroe?”
